Talos Family vs. Family Link vs. Qustodio

Various child safety solutions protect families in very different ways.

Google Family Link is particularly powerful within the Google ecosystem, which includes Android and Chromebooks.

Qustodio supports significantly more operating systems, but generally requires that the Qustodio Kids app be installed and set up on every device belonging to the child that you want to protect.

Talos Family provides protection at the network level. Devices using the secure Talos VPN router connection can benefit from the same DNS filtering without having to install separate parental control software on each device.

Google Family Link

Family Link is free and offers a wide range of parental control features when a child uses an Android device or Chromebook.

Google notes that iPhones, iPads, and computers other than Chromebooks do not have access to the full range of features offered by Family Link device supervision.

A child can still sign in to Chrome on Windows, Mac, Linux, iPhone, or iPad. Certain website restrictions can then be applied through the child's Google Account.

However, these controls depend on the child remaining signed in to the supervised Chrome profile.

Google also notes that a child using Windows, macOS, or Linux can switch to a different Chrome profile or a different browser. In that case, the Chrome restrictions set by Family Link will no longer apply.

For families who mainly use Android smartphones and Chromebooks, Family Link can therefore be a very good free solution.

However, in households with many different types of devices, coverage is more limited.

Qustodio

Qustodio offers significantly broader device support than Family Link.

Qustodio supports, among other things, devices running Android, iPhone, and iPad, Windows, macOS, Chromebook, as well as Amazon Fire and Kindle.

This makes Qustodio a powerful solution for families who want detailed parental controls across different operating systems.

However, Qustodio takes a device-based approach.

The Qustodio Kids app generally needs to be installed on every protected device. In addition, the necessary operating system permissions must be granted, and the device must remain compatible with Qustodio.

The range of features may also vary depending on the operating system.

Qustodio itself recommends keeping operating systems up to date so that the app continues to work properly.

Talos Family

Talos Family takes a different approach.

Instead of relying primarily on software that must be installed on each of a child's devices, Talos Family can apply protection through the family's secure VPN router connection.

As a result, filtering is largely independent of whether the device is an Android device, iPhone, iPad, Windows PC, Mac, Linux computer, smart TV, PlayStation, Xbox, tablet, or any other internet-enabled device.

When a device's Internet traffic is routed through the secure Talos connection, Talos can apply the defined filter rules at the network level.

Centrally Updated Protection

Another advantage of network-based filtering is that the protection mechanisms can be managed centrally.

Parents don't have to manually update block lists on each of their children's devices.

When Talos Family centrally updates its filter rules, threat intelligence, or DNS protection, devices within the protected connection can benefit from these changes without having to reconfigure every smartphone, tablet, computer, or TV.

This is particularly relevant when it comes to protecting against fraud and phishing.

Fraudulent domains can appear very quickly. A fake package notification, bank website, or login page may not have even existed when the device was originally set up.

With centrally managed filters, the level of protection can be enhanced without parents having to reinstall parental control software or change settings on every device.

Automatically use the latest available Talos protection

With Talos Family, security is managed centrally and is not based solely on a static configuration set up once on a single child's device.

When Talos updates its filter rules and threat intelligence, protected connections can automatically use the latest available filter rules.

No manual updates to block lists on each device.

No need to reinstall it on every new smartphone or tablet.

No dependence on a specific mobile operating system.

Less Effort with Device-Specific Workarounds

Children and teenagers can be very resourceful when it comes to technology.

With device-based parental controls, parents may have to deal with alternative browsers, different browser profiles, changes to app permissions, newly installed apps, operating system updates, or new devices on which parental controls have not yet been set up.

For example, Google notes that on Windows, Mac, and Linux, a child can use a different Chrome profile or a different browser to which Family Link's Chrome restrictions do not apply.

Parents therefore do not have to set up the same website restrictions separately in every browser.

However, if Talos is set up correctly as a protected and enforced family network connection, it can reduce the need for many simple device-specific workarounds—such as those related to browser settings or individual parental control apps.

Qustodio

Best suited for: Parents who want detailed monitoring across multiple popular operating systems.

Advantages: Supports Android, iOS, Windows, Mac, Chromebook, and Amazon Fire. Extensive features for screen time, app management, and activity monitoring.

Limitations: Compatible software must be installed and maintained on the protected children's devices. The range of features varies depending on the platform. Smart TVs and traditional game consoles are not among the Qustodio children's platforms that are regularly supported.

Talos Family

Best suited for: Families who want centrally managed filtering and web security without having to install monitoring software on each of their children's devices.

Advantages: Network-level protection, broad device compatibility, protection against fraud and phishing, social media and gaming filtering, centralized updates to protection rules, and support for devices on which traditional parental control apps cannot be installed.
